AfE-Turm, Brutalist skyscraper in Bockenheim, Germany
The AfE Tower was a 116 meter tall building with 32 floors, constructed from precast lightweight concrete elements and containing two distinct sections for different academic purposes. The structure featured varying floor heights between north and south sections, creating a complex internal layout.
The tower was built in 1972 as part of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University's Bockenheim campus, shaping the skyline for several decades. In 2014, the building was demolished through controlled implosion, marking the end of an era for the institution.
The tower housed teaching facilities for Social Sciences and Psychology, serving as a gathering place for students across multiple disciplines. The library in the north wing was a central meeting point where people from different departments came together.
Seven elevators provided movement throughout the building, though capacity was frequently exceeded during peak times. The varying floor heights between sections meant visitors needed time to navigate the complex internal layout.
The building was a technical innovation for its time, using different floor heights to accommodate various academic needs. This unusual feature made navigating the spaces a distinctive experience that characterized the structure throughout its existence.
