Institut für vergleichende Irrelevanz, Self-managed social center in Bockenheim district, Frankfurt, Germany.
The Institut für vergleichende Irrelevanz occupied a 1953 building in the Bockenheim district, near Senckenberg Museum and marked by protected architectural elements under German heritage law. Its location at Kettenhofweg 130 placed it directly adjacent to Goethe University and the Westend neighborhood.
Students occupied the then-vacant university building in December 2003 and founded the center as an independent educational space. The project ended with police evacuation in April 2013.
The center served as a place where lectures and discussions about social questions took place, regularly attended by people interested in alternative thinking. Its spaces reflected this commitment, with materials and furnishings arranged to support exchange and study groups.
The site is easily reached with open access from nearby Senckenberganlage and can be explored as part of a walking route through the university quarter. The surroundings offer plenty of space to stroll and orient yourself, especially worthwhile when combined with the neighboring museum.
The center followed the motto 'Theory, Practice, Party' and offered an alternative education program outside conventional university structures. This approach made it an unusual space within academic Frankfurt.
