Waldheide, Natural glade in Heilbronn, Germany
Waldheide is a 52-hectare glade surrounded by oak-dominated forests on sandy soil in eastern Heilbronn. The space transitions between open meadows and forested edges, creating distinct zones across the terrain.
The area served as a US military missile base for Pershing II rockets after World War II until military operations ended in 1990. Following troop withdrawal, the land returned to public use.
Locals use the glade for walks and observing nature, while sheep keep the landscape open and maintain its character. The grazing helps rare plants thrive across the meadow.
The site is accessible via highways A6 and A81, with the nearest exit at Weinsberg about 3 kilometers east of the city center. A network of marked trails allows easy navigation and access for different visitor types.
The northern section of about 4.5 hectares became a natural monument in 1994 to protect rare heath vegetation and threatened yellow-bellied toads. This protected zone shows how specialized species survive in wetland areas.
