Prüm Air Station, Radar installation in Prüm, Germany
Prüm Air Station is a former radar facility located north of Prüm equipped with communication towers and surveillance equipment for air traffic monitoring. The site spans a strategic area with infrastructure designed for airspace observation and data collection.
The United States established this radar station in 1950 to support military air operations during the Cold War. It functioned as part of a broader surveillance network protecting Western German airspace.
The station brought together American service members and local residents over many decades, creating a shared history within the community. This coexistence shaped how people in Prüm and surrounding villages experienced daily life during the military occupation.
The site is not open to public access today as wind turbines have been built on the grounds. Visitors can observe the surroundings from outside but cannot enter the facility itself.
The station closed in 2004, after which the German Weather Service took over meteorological functions at the site. Today two wind turbines operate there, powering thousands of households with renewable energy.
