Victoria Barracks, Military barracks in Werl and Ense, Germany.
Victoria Barracks was a military installation spread across two separate sites in Werl and Ense, built with solid brick structures, administrative buildings, and large training grounds. The entire complex was demolished and no longer exists today.
The barracks opened in 1956 to house Canadian forces before passing to British control in 1970. After the British left in 1994, the site sat unused for years until its demolition in 2018.
The barracks had their own cinema, gymnasium, and shared spaces where soldiers spent time between duties. These facilities gave the grounds the feel of a self-contained small community.
There is nothing left to see on site, as the entire installation was cleared in 2018. Those interested in its history can look into local archives or historical photographs.
The Canadians had built an ice rink on the grounds, which was torn down during the 1970 handover because the British forces had no use for it. This small detail points to how differently the two armies approached daily life on base.
