Elbwiesen, Natural landscape along Elbe River in Dresden, Germany
Elbwiesen is a natural landscape extending on both sides of the Elbe River with varying widths across its length. The terrain consists of open meadow areas managed through regular maintenance and grazing activities.
From the 1950s through the 1970s, portions of these meadows functioned as a gliding airfield serving the local aviation community. The area later transitioned back to agricultural and ecological management as its primary use.
The meadows serve as a gathering place for outdoor events and entertainment throughout the year. Sheep herds create a pastoral scene that contrasts beautifully with the city's historic skyline visible from the fields.
The meadows are accessible for walking and cycling with clear pathways along the river. During wet periods, some sections may become muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended for comfortable exploration.
Hay is harvested twice yearly from these meadows, creating habitat conditions for specialized plants and animals adapted to open grassland. This management practice preserves a variety of species that would otherwise disappear in surrounding regions.
