Festung Xperience, History museum in Altstadt, Dresden, Germany.
Festung Xperience is a history museum housed within the casemates beneath Bruehl's Terrace that presents Dresden's story through surround projections and spatial audio. The exhibition spaces follow the path of the historical fortifications and reveal different periods of the city's past.
The fortifications began in the 16th century as a response to military threats and were expanded and rebuilt over several centuries. These defenses shaped the city's development and provide today's insight into the defense technologies of past eras.
The vaults beneath Bruehl's Terrace show how the city continuously adapted its defenses over time. Visitors see these changes reflected in the rooms themselves, where old walls and modern displays sit side by side.
The museum is located directly beneath Bruehl's Terrace and is accessible through a central entrance, with about half an hour enough time to grasp the basics. The underground rooms stay cool and dry year-round, so comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear are advisable.
The casemates were originally designed as barracks and storage for soldiers before later serving as shelters during modern air raids. This dual purpose allows visitors today to discover both old military structures and traces from the Second World War.
