Coselpalais, City palace in Inner Old Town, Dresden, Germany
The Coselpalais is a five-story baroque palace with eleven symmetrical window axes located in Dresden's inner old town. Its facade features elaborate decorative elements and a grand festival hall on the first upper floor.
Count Friedrich August von Cosel bought two damaged buildings in 1762 and had them transformed into an elegant residence by 1764 in Dresden Rococo style. This conversion shaped the character of the old town square for centuries.
The palace currently houses several restaurants, the Dresden Piano Salon company, and office spaces next to the Frauenkirche church.
The building underwent thorough renovation between 1998 and 2000 using traditional brick construction methods rather than modern concrete techniques. Its location next to the Frauenkirche makes it easy to visit as part of a walking tour through the old town.
The facade incorporates elaborate sculptural elements created by Johann Gottfried Knöffler, which elevate the work to an artistic composition. These fine details are easy to miss from a distance, but closer inspection reveals the craftsmanship of the 18th century.
