Skulpturensammlung Dresden, Art collection in Dresden, Germany
The Skulpturensammlung Dresden displays sculptures spanning five thousand years, from classical antiquity to modern art, located across two historic buildings. The works are arranged chronologically: the Zwinger shows pieces up to 1800, while the Albertinum presents artistic developments from 1800 onwards.
Augustus, Elector of Saxony, established the collection in 1560 and expanded it over centuries. A major influx of ancient works arrived from Rome in 1729 and were initially displayed in the Großer Garten.
The collection displays works by artists from different periods and cultures, representing various techniques and forms of artistic expression. Visitors can observe how representational styles changed dramatically from ancient times through the modern era.
The collection is spread across two accessible buildings that allow for a chronological visit. Visitors should plan time for both locations to experience the full range of works.
The collection ranks among the oldest outside Italy and preserved its holdings through extremely difficult circumstances. After being removed by Soviet forces, many works did not return to Dresden until 1958.
