Rotenburg Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Rotenburg an der Fulda, Germany.
Rotenburg Castle is a medieval castle ruin on a hill above the town of Rotenburg an der Fulda in Hesse, Germany. Sections of the outer walls and fortification structures are still standing, giving a sense of how large the original complex once was.
The castle was built in the medieval period and was once considered one of the largest fortresses in the region, rivaling the Wartburg in scale. It was destroyed during the Star War in the 14th century, a regional conflict from which it never recovered.
The ruins on the hill are a popular destination for walkers from Rotenburg and the surrounding area. From what remains of the walls, visitors get a wide view over the Fulda valley, which makes the climb worthwhile.
A marked trail from the parking area near the cardiovascular center leads up to the ruins on the hill. The path is easy to follow, but the ground can be slippery in wet weather, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
During a siege, attackers managed to poison the castle's water supply, which broke the defenders' resistance. The story stuck so firmly in local memory that townspeople carried the nickname 'Bornschisser' for generations afterward.
