Gemarker Kirche, Protestant church in Barmen district, Wuppertal, Germany
Gemarker Kirche is a Protestant church in Wuppertal's Barmen district featuring eclectic architecture and towering exterior walls. Five bronze bells cast by the Rincker foundry in 1962 hang in the tower and define the soundscape of the parish.
The building was originally erected in 1710 under Duke Johann Wilhelm II and then rebuilt between 1887 and 1890 to accommodate growth from industrialization. Reconstruction after wartime destruction lasted from 1954 to 1955.
The church displays bronze sculptures titled Frierender and Wartender, installed in 2015, which reinforce the spiritual expression of the building.
The church is accessible during services and community events, with regular visiting times to observe. A quarterly newsletter informs about upcoming activities and parish opening hours.
During British air raids in May 1943, the building's interior was completely destroyed, yet its massive exterior walls remained standing and became the foundation for reconstruction. These surviving walls are a visible testimony to both destruction and the community's resilience.
