Enzian hut, Mountain hut in Allgäu Alps, Germany
Enzian hut sits in the Allgäu Alps at roughly 1800 meters elevation and accommodates about 40 overnight guests plus around 90 people in shared spaces. The building contains sleeping rooms, a dining hall, and outdoor areas for resting and gathering.
The hut was built in 1937 and became an important refuge for mountaineers exploring the region. A major renovation in the 1980s modernized the building, requiring significant effort to bring materials to the high location.
The place embodies alpine tradition through its simple shared sleeping rooms and communal dining where guests from different backgrounds gather around local ingredients. Visitors experience how mountain huts serve as gathering spots where mountain culture is lived and shared each day.
The route to the hut starts from valleys below and climbs through meadows and forest sections on the way up. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow adequate time since the elevation gain and terrain demand physical effort.
The facility has operated a small on-site brewery since around 2010, brewing different beer varieties using traditional recipes. Guests can taste these handcrafted beers directly at the refuge, offering a glimpse into an unusual mountain venture.
