Protestant Church, Borgholzhausen

The Protestant Church in Borgholzhausen is a church building featuring Gothic architectural elements dating to the 14th century. The interior is defined by its stone carvings, most notably the sculpted altar that occupies a central place within the nave.

The church structure dates to 1340 and replaced an earlier building documented as far back as 1169 during the era of the Counts of Ravensberg. The site thus served as a center of religious life in the region for many centuries.

The stone-carved altar from 1501 depicts 13 scenes of the Passion of Jesus and was created to help congregation members who could not read understand biblical stories through images. This visual approach to religious instruction was a common way for churches of that period to reach everyone in the community.

The exterior underwent significant renovation work in 2010 and 2011 focused on restoring the plasterwork to protect the building's condition. Plan to explore the church on foot and consider visiting the surrounding old town area at the same time.

A monument in front of the church honors soldiers who died in armed conflicts between 1864 and 1871, marking the community's memory of loss. The memorial connects the religious space with local remembrance and shows how such sites hold meaning beyond their original purpose.
