Heldenburg, Castle ruin in Salzderhelden, Einbeck, Germany

Heldenburg is a castle ruin on a hilltop with preserved stone remains of a four-wing building surrounding a square courtyard. The site shows traces of a residential palace, chapel, storage cellars, and a distinctive tower with an interior spiral staircase.

The castle was built between 1100 and 1200 and later became the main seat of the dukes of Grubenhagen. It held this role until the end of the 16th century, when the residence was abandoned.

The chapel and spiral staircase tower show how castle residents lived and worshipped in the Middle Ages. Visitors can still see traces of these daily spaces in the remaining walls today.

The ruins are accessible via marked pathways with information panels throughout the site. Visitors should note that path conditions vary by season and sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the uneven stone surfaces.

The castle witnessed one of Germany's earliest recorded cannon attacks in 1365 during a siege by Landgrave Friedrich of Thuringia. This event marks it as an important site in the history of military technology in the region.
