Heldenburg, Castle ruin in Salzderhelden, Einbeck, Germany

The stone remains of Heldenburg castle stand on a hill, featuring parts of a four-wing building structure surrounding a square courtyard with remnants of a palace.

Built between 1100 and 1200, Heldenburg served as the main residence for the dukes of Welf principality of Grubenhagen from 1291 until 1596.

The castle grounds contain stone walls, a chapel, a spiral staircase tower, and former beer cellars that demonstrate medieval German architectural methods.

The castle ruins underwent restoration work from 1983 to 1988, making the historical structure accessible to visitors through dedicated pathways and information panels.

In 1365, Heldenburg recorded one of the first documented uses of cannons in castle defense during a siege by Landgrave Friedrich von Thüringen.
