Käflingsbergturm, Fire lookout and observation tower in Kargow, Germany
Käflingsbergturm is a steel lattice tower with a triangular cross-section, located on the Käflingsberg hill in the municipality of Kargow, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It rises 55 m and has a publicly accessible observation platform as well as a cabin used as a fire monitoring station.
The tower was built in 2000 by Deutsche Telekom to improve mobile network coverage in the region. From 2005, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania took over its management and opened it to visitors.
The tower stands inside Müritz National Park, one of the largest forested areas in Germany, and draws hikers who want to see the lake district from above. From the platform, the mix of forests and open water stretches in every direction.
The climb to the observation platform is steep, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before you start. On a clear day, the view from the top takes in the lakes of the Müritz area and the towns of Waren and Neustrelitz in the distance.
At 36 m up, a cabin is used around the clock by forest fire watchers who scan the surrounding woods for any sign of smoke or fire. Most visitors walk straight past it on their way up without realizing what it is for.
