Pheasant Island, Cultural heritage island in Eutin, Germany.
Pheasant Island is a small island in the southern part of Großer Eutiner See lake in Schleswig-Holstein. It sits within the water and functions today as a heritage monument without public access to its grounds.
In the 9th century, a Slavic fortress called Utin stood on this location. The Holsteiners destroyed this fortress in 1138 during their conquest of the Wagria region.
The island is visible from the Baroque garden of Eutin Castle and forms an important part of the designed landscape. Visitors to the castle grounds can view it from the shore and appreciate how it was integrated into the garden's composition.
The island is privately owned and not open to the public. You can view it best from the lakeshore promenade or from the castle park grounds.
The name comes from a former pheasantry that operated here and shaped the island's story. This detail reveals how the island once served as an economic space for the local nobility.
