Cologne sewerage system, Underground sewer network in Neustadt-Nord, Cologne, Germany

The Cologne sewerage system extends over 2,400 kilometers beneath the city, featuring vaulted ceilings and varied tunnel widths throughout its structure.

The Romans constructed the first sewers in Cologne during the first century, which remained largely unchanged for approximately 1,800 years until the 19th century modernization.

The Chandelier Hall, a storm-water overflow structure within the sewer system, serves as a concert venue for jazz and classical music performances.

Monthly guided tours of the sewerage system operate from March through September, allowing visitors to explore sections of both modern and Roman underground structures.

The system includes a ceremonial hall where two ornate chandeliers were installed in 1890 to impress Kaiser Wilhelm II during the planned inauguration ceremony.
