Sternwellenzelt, Membrane tent structure in Deutz, Germany
The Sternwellenzelt is a membrane tent structure in Deutz featuring a star-shaped roof composed of twelve identical segments arranged around a central ring. The coated polyester roof covers approximately 500 square meters and is supported by six lightweight masts, with the edges creating a distinctive wave pattern.
The roof was designed by German architect Frei Otto for the 1957 Federal Garden Show in Cologne and set new standards in architectural innovation. The design showcased pioneering techniques in membrane architecture that have since become widely adopted in the field.
The structure serves as the focal point of the Tanzbrunnen complex, hosting a circular dance floor positioned above an artificial water surface. Visitors can experience how the design brings together architecture and water in a single unified space.
The roof provides protection from weather while allowing good sightlines to the surrounding landscape thanks to its transparent materials and open design. The height of the masts ensures the space feels open and airy even when occupied.
The central opening in the roof allows an unobstructed view skyward and creates a unique transition between the sheltered space below and the open sky above. This detail gives the place a special quality that shifts throughout the day as light moves through the opening.
