Rheinhallen, Architectural heritage monument in Deutz, Cologne, Germany
Rheinhallen is a building complex on the Rhine riverbank in Deutz with a distinctive red brick perimeter wall that frames views toward Cologne Cathedral. Multiple exhibition halls connect throughout the structure, and an adjacent seven-story parking facility holds around 2,000 spaces.
The complex was built in 1924 under the initiative of Mayor Konrad Adenauer as an exhibition venue for the city. During the 1928 International Press Exhibition, the grounds received a unified red brick façade that defines the overall appearance.
The building now houses RTL Television's headquarters, having transformed from its original role as exhibition grounds. This shift shows how spaces adapt to serve new purposes while maintaining their physical character.
The site sits directly along the Rhine riverbank and is easily reached on foot from the city center or nearby riverside paths. The attached parking area provides ample spaces for those arriving by car.
The main hall's roof uses an innovative design with inflatable foil cushions that allows it to host diverse events throughout the year. This construction method was a technical innovation when first introduced.
