Skylight, Modern architectural structure in Frankfurt, Germany

Skylight is a complex of offices, shops and flats between Bleichstraße, Brönnerstraße, Stephanstraße and Katzenpforte in central Frankfurt, opened on 6 September 2001. Its E-shaped main building, six to eight storeys high, measures 70 metres along Bleichstraße and 70 metres along Katzenpforte, with shops and restaurants on the ground floors and offices above. Four separate point apartment blocks stand in front of the open east side toward Brönnerstraße, forming a large northern and a smaller southern courtyard, and a 21-storey residential tower with 40 flats rises at the north-west corner.

The building was completed in 2001 following the design of British architect Richard Rogers. The project marked a shift in Frankfurt architecture by emphasizing transparency and natural light in commercial design.

The site was long part of Frankfurt's Neustadt, laid out after 1333 behind the fortifications; 16th- and 17th-century plans show bleaching gardens there, and the Bleichstraße name recalls them. The medieval Katzenpforte lane, once abandoned to enlarge the Senckenberg grounds, was reopened through the complex. The Hans-Flesch-Platz, south of the residential tower, is shaped by the deliberately exposed ventilation pipes of the underground garage.

The complex is bounded by Bleichstraße, Brönnerstraße, Stephanstraße and Katzenpforte in the Innenstadt. Pedestrian entrances sit at Stephanstraße in the southwest, mid-block on Katzenpforte, at the corner of Katzenpforte and Bleichstraße by the residential tower, and on the Brönnerstraße side. The Katzenpforte entrance also leads to the three-level underground garage.

The site was gardens behind Frankfurt's medieval walls before becoming the second Bürgerhospital, built 1871–75 to plans by Oscar Pichler under Rudolf Heinrich Burnitz. A Postscheckamt followed in 1919/20, damaged only slightly in the wartime air raids and demolished in early 1995 after standing empty for years.
