Finkenwerder Süderelbe

The Finkenwerder Süderelbe reserve spans 92 hectares, featuring inlet-rich still waters, tidal creeks, channels, and extensive reed beds along the riverbanks.

The protected area originated from a former side branch of the Elbe River and received its first conservation status in 1989, followed by a second designation in 1997.

The reserve connects to the agricultural heritage of the region through its proximity to grasslands and traditional fruit tree orchards of the Finkenwerder district.

Two observation huts managed by the German Nature Conservation Association provide visitors with opportunities to observe the diverse bird species inhabiting the area.

The shallow waters, reaching only half a meter in depth, create essential breeding grounds for numerous meadow birds and serve as winter resting spots for geese.
