Niedrigwasserschleuse Magdeburg, Navigation lock in Magdeburg, Germany
The Niedrigwasserschleuse lock measures 190 meters in length and 25 meters in width, maintaining a water depth of 4 meters in the Rothensee connecting canal.
Construction of the lock began on May 23, 2007, after initial plans from before World War II remained unrealized during the National Socialist period.
The lock represents a significant component of German Unity Transport Project No. 17, strengthening the connection between eastern and western German waterways.
The lock operates only during low water levels of the Elbe River, while remaining open for free passage when water levels are higher.
A pumping station regulates water levels in the Rothensee connecting canal, enabling year-round navigation with full draft depth regardless of Elbe River conditions.
