Lieberose Heath, Natural landscape in Brandenburg, Germany
Lieberose Heath is a natural landscape in eastern Brandenburg made up of sandy terrain, wetlands, and mixed forests spread across a wide open area. Marked trails cross the site, and information stations along the way explain the ongoing work to restore the natural water systems.
For decades the land was used as a military training ground, and after that use ended it was largely left alone. Conservation work began after 2000, gradually turning the former military zone into a protected area.
Cranes and otters have returned to the area, and visitors walking the trails can spot them in the open wetlands and forest edges. This visible return of wildlife gives the place a character that changes with the seasons and rewards patient observation.
The terrain mixes sand, wet ground, and open heath, so sturdy footwear makes the walk more comfortable on most sections of the trails. Some parts of the area may be harder to reach depending on the season, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
Although the former military zone was planted with single-species pine forests, those trees are now slowly giving way to mixed woodland without any human intervention. Walkers on the trails can see this shift directly, with young broadleaf trees growing up between the older pines in many sections.
