Albrechtshaus

Albrechtshaus is a substantial stone structure with multiple floors set within the landscape of Oberharz am Brocken. The building displays the typical design of medical facilities that were specifically created to house and treat patients with respiratory conditions.

The facility was built in 1897 as a specialized treatment center for respiratory illnesses that were common at the time. It served patients for decades before antibiotics transformed medical practice.

The building reflects how people understood medical care for lung disease in its time through its architecture and room arrangement. Its design shows the beliefs about recovery that guided treatment centers of that period.

The ruins are located in a rural area and are best reached on foot from the town center of Stiege. The path goes through wooded terrain, so weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear are worthwhile.

The building ranks among the few remaining examples of pulmonary treatment centers from the early twentieth century in central Germany. Its current state as a ruin shows how these facilities appeared during the decades after their medical function ended.
