Honsell bridge, Steel and road bridge in Osthafen district, Frankfurt, Germany
Honsell Bridge is a steel road structure spanning the Frankfurt East Harbor with two traffic lanes plus separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists. The construction features arched elements with a steel composite deck suspended by enclosed cables.
Construction began in 1908 during harbor expansion and was completed in 1912 under engineer Max Honsell's direction. Between 2011 and 2013, the structure underwent major modernization with improved load capacity.
The bridge displays Art Nouveau style with maritime stone reliefs showing harbor workers at their tasks. These decorative details reflect the location's connection to port activity.
The bridge is easily accessible and offers safe passages for different types of traffic. Visitors should be aware of port activity, especially when crossing during active harbor hours.
The structure uses an orthotropic slab in the pedestrian area, a specialized construction technique that reduces weight. This technical solution creates a lighter and more efficient deck.
