Garten der Erinnerung, Garden installation in Duisburg Inner Harbour, Germany
The Garden of Remembrance is an artistic installation in Duisburg's inner harbor where white-painted concrete structures sit among straight walking paths. The entire site uses remnants of post-war buildings and transforms the former industrial space into a place for visual and intellectual engagement.
The artwork was created in 1999 by artist Dani Karavan to commemorate the destruction and losses from World War II in the region. The inner harbor itself became a place of rebuilding and industrial renewal after the war.
The garden speaks about memory and loss through its empty spaces and white frames that invite contemplation. Visitors experience an artwork that fits into the industrial landscape and directs attention to what is often overlooked.
The garden is open to the public and invites self-guided exploration, with various paths allowing time for quiet reflection. The grounds are flat and easy to walk, suitable for a visit at any time of year.
The installation works through subtraction rather than addition, with the artist removing material from existing structures to create white frames. This approach makes the site an unexpected place where the surrounding environment is seen afresh through artistic voids.
