Sesselfelsgrotte, Prehistoric cave in Essing, Germany.

The Sesselfelsgrotte sits 25 meters above the Altmühl River, featuring a seven-meter-thick sequence of geological layers within its limestone walls.

Archaeological excavations between 1964 and 1981 uncovered over 100,000 artifacts dating back to the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods.

Scientists discovered fourteen Neanderthal remains in the cave, including a rare eight-month-old fetus and two milk teeth from different periods.

The cave location at 374 meters above sea level provides researchers continuous access to study geological formations and ancient human settlements.

The site contains undisturbed sediment layers stretching back 125,000 years, documenting the development of Mousterian and Micoquian cultures.
