St. Georgen, Baroque church in Glaucha district, Halle, Germany.
St. Georgen is a baroque church in the Glaucha district with a square tower on its east side topped by a rounded dome. The interior is spaciously designed and accommodates around 3,000 worshippers.
The church was first documented in 1121 and suffered a devastating fire in 1740 that destroyed it to its foundations. Reconstruction followed a Greek cross layout and was completed in 1744.
The church sits at the heart of Glaucha and is regularly used by residents of the neighborhood. Its interior with original furnishings reflects the religious tradition of the area.
The church is located at Glauchaer Strasse 9 and is accessible by public transport via the Glauchaer Platz tram station. Parking is available at Steg and Moritzzwinger.
From October to December 1813, the building served as a military hospital for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Leipzig. This use shows the important role the place played during the Napoleonic Wars.
