Wilhelm-Friedemann-Bach-Haus, Music museum in Halle, Germany.
The Wilhelm Friedemann Bach House is a music museum in Halle housed in a restored Renaissance building that displays musical instruments, documents, and artifacts from several centuries of German music. The spaces feature multiple listening stations where visitors can hear historical compositions and learn about the composers who lived in or visited this city.
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, lived in this house from 1746 to 1770 while working as an organist at Marktkirche. His residence here marks an important chapter in Halle's musical development during the 18th century.
The museum honors six important composers who shaped Halle's musical life: Samuel Scheidt, Georg Friedrich Händel, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Johann Reichardt, Carl Loewe, and Robert Franz. Visitors discover how their work reflected the musical tastes and cultural values of different periods in this German city.
The museum is located on Große Klausstraße and reopened in 2012 after extensive restoration work. Plan to spend time moving through the different rooms and using the listening stations to experience the collections fully.
The building preserves a 16th-century Bohlenstube, a specially insulated room that displays period musical instruments and reveals how music was practiced in private homes centuries ago. This rare feature gives visitors insight into the domestic musical life of earlier times.
