Friedhof Höchst, Historic cemetery in Frankfurt, Germany

Friedhof Höchst is a cemetery in Frankfurt that features a notable funeral hall with a dome resting on four columns and crowned by a golden cross. The grounds spread across a substantial area with numerous well-tended graves arranged along pathways.

Friedhof Höchst opened in 1924 as the Höchster Hauptfriedhof, built after the old cemeteries of Höchst and its 1917-incorporated districts were full. City master builder Paul Wempe planned the grounds at 13 hectares, measuring 430 by 615 metres, and designed the funeral hall. Surveyor Carl Rohleder laid out Windthorststraße to run straight toward the cemetery portal and continue along its main axis.

The cemetery is one of six Wahlfriedhöfe (elective cemeteries) in Frankfurt, meaning residents of the city may choose burial here. Among the graves are those of actress and voice actress Rosemarie Fendel, satirist and cartoonist Chlodwig Poth, chemist Friedrich Stolz and politician Hermann Schmitt-Vockenhausen. The murder victim Tristan Brübach is also buried here.

The cemetery is easily accessible on foot and well laid out with paths that allow for a peaceful visit. Many graves are photographed and documented, making it easier for visitors to locate specific burial sites.

The cemetery opened in 1924 as the Höchster Hauptfriedhof on the Sossenheimer Chaussee, planned by Stadtbaumeister Paul Wempe for 13 hectares, 430 by 615 metres. Surveyor Carl Rohleder laid out Windthorststraße at the same time, running straight to the cemetery portal and continuing along its main axis to the centre. The site today covers 16.8 hectares and is one of Frankfurt's six Wahlfriedhöfe.
