Former Iraqi Embassy, Berlin, Abandoned diplomatic building in Pankow, Germany.
The former Iraqi Embassy in Pankow is a building constructed from prefabricated elements using East German building methods. The structure displays typical functionalist design with simple, practical forms.
The country opened this embassy in 1974 after becoming the first non-socialist nation to recognize East Germany in 1969. The building was abandoned in 1991 when Germany expelled its diplomats during the Gulf War.
The building reflects ties between Iraq and East Germany that formed during the Cold War. Visitors can see how spaces were once used as a working diplomatic center.
The building is located at Tschaikowskistraße 51 and is not open to visitors since it has remained empty for decades. You can view it from the outside, but there is no interior access available.
The third floor contains a room filled with scattered documents and papers that visitors call the Book Room. These abandoned papers have remained untouched since the staff left quickly during the political upheaval.
