Friedberger Warte

Friedberger Warte, Medieval watchtower in Frankfurt, Germany

The Friedberger Warte is a defense tower in Frankfurt featuring a rectangular courtyard measuring roughly 22 by 28 meters, a guardhouse on the western side, and a prominent tower structure. The ensemble displays medieval defensive architecture with its thick stone walls.

Early watchtowers at this location date back to 1350, before the current structure was built in 1478 as the final tower of Frankfurt's Landwehr defensive line. The structure marked an important part of the city's defenses for centuries.

The building has served as a traditional restaurant since 1815, where visitors can enjoy local specialties like apple wine and beer in a historic setting. The rooms preserve the character of a classic Frankfurt tavern.

The site is located in an active urban area with good public transport connections and is easy to reach. Visitors should note that it operates as a working restaurant, so opening times and capacity should be taken into account.

In 2012, the square surrounding the tower underwent a major transformation when the traffic circle was converted into a multifunctional plaza with integrated tram lines. This modern redesign created an interesting contrast between the medieval structure and contemporary urban planning.
