Fritz Rémond Theater, Private theater in Frankfurt, Germany
The Fritz Rémond Theater is a spoken-word theater housed in the Zoogesellschaftshaus building on the grounds of Frankfurt Zoo. The venue presents a program of contemporary and classical plays throughout the year, with several productions per season.
Fritz Rémond, an actor, founded the theater in 1947, shortly after the end of World War II, when stages across Frankfurt were reopening. It was among the first venues to bring back plays that had been banned during the Nazi years.
The Fritz Rémond Theater sits inside the Zoogesellschaftshaus, a building that also hosts social events and gatherings. Many visitors combine an evening at the theater with a walk through the zoo next door.
The theater is on the Frankfurt Zoo grounds and is easy to reach by public transport or on foot from the city center. Checking the program in advance is a good idea, as run times vary and some shows sell out quickly.
The theater still carries the name of its founder, which is relatively rare among German stages. Curd Jürgens and Heinz Rühmann, both later known as film actors, performed here in the early postwar years before their careers took off on screen.
