Gehilfersberg, Mountain summit in Hesse, Germany
Gehilfersberg is a summit in the Vogelsberg region rising to 456 meters above sea level with forested slopes covered in deciduous trees. The top holds a chapel that serves as the focal point of the mountain.
The Baroque chapel was built between 1623 and 1632, replacing an earlier structure that stood on the mountain. Construction took place under the rule of Johann Bernhard Schenk von Schweinsberg.
The chapel at the summit serves as an important pilgrimage destination where visitors come to honor the Fourteen Holy Helpers and the Virgin Mary. The site draws people who value its role as a spiritual gathering place in the region.
Hikers can reach the summit via marked walking paths that start from the nearby village of Rasdorf and lead upward. The trails are well-marked, making navigation straightforward for visitors of different abilities.
The mountain contains a fortified cemetery with defensive towers and high walls that demonstrate a rare example of medieval defensive architecture. This walled burial ground shows how a cemetery and protection structure were once combined.
