Glashütte Steinkrug

Glashütte Steinkrug, Historical glassworks in Wennigsen, Germany.

Glashütte Steinkrug is an industrial complex with a distinctive sandstone tower about 13 meters high, built in 1839 and situated at the forest edge. The factory produced wine bottles, window panes, and large glass containers for the chemical industry.

The glassworks began operating in 1809 and continued until 1928, founded by Baron Wilhelm Carl Ernst Knigge who owned the nearby Bredenbeck estate. It became a significant industrial site in the region during its active years.

Glass makers and their families lived in houses built next to the factory, forming a close community of specialized workers. Visitors can observe how these artisans organized their daily lives within the industrial compound.

The site is best explored on foot and offers clear views of the buildings and tower from various angles. Visitors should take time to explore the grounds around the factory and the worker housing to understand the full scope of the complex.

The factory operated twelve melting ovens that allowed simultaneous production of different glass types and colors, including deep blue glass for South American markets. This technical capacity made it a remarkable production hub for its era.
