Schloss Detmold, Renaissance castle in Detmold, Germany.
Schloss Detmold is a four-winged Renaissance castle in the center of Detmold, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It has a central keep with multi-storey oriel windows and a parapet decorated with the family coats of arms of the counts of Lippe.
The current building was constructed between 1560 and 1575, replacing an earlier medieval fortification on the same site. It served for centuries as the seat of the counts and later princes of Lippe.
Inside the castle, rooms decorated with Flemish tapestries from the 17th century give a clear picture of how the nobility lived in that era. The original furniture and artwork still fill these spaces, making the interiors feel less like a museum and more like a home.
The castle is only accessible through guided tours, which vary depending on the season. It is worth checking opening times in advance, as availability may be more limited in winter.
Part of the castle is still used as a private residence by members of the House of Lippe, making it one of the few inhabited castles in Germany. This gives the building a character that is different from most historic properties, which function purely as visitor sites.
