Synagoge

This synagogue was built in 1907 on Lortzingstrasse with neoromanesque architecture featuring a central dome and decorated windows designed by Louis Blecher. The structure was substantial and visible, making it an important architectural presence in the town.

The Jewish community in Detmold built three synagogues across more than 300 years, with the 1907 structure being the last one. This final building was destroyed by fire in 1938 during a violent pogrom.

This building served as the central meeting place for the Jewish community to gather for religious services and celebrations. It held deep meaning for local families who marked important life events within its walls.

The site is marked today by a memorial stone placed in 1994 at its original location on Lortzingstrasse. The stone displays inscriptions honoring the building's history and those who gathered there.

During the violent events of November 1938, the building was set on fire and destroyed beyond recovery. What remained of it was completely removed in the following months.
