Gnomenkeller, Historical restaurant in Flensburg, Germany
Gnomenkeller is a restaurant in Flensburg housed in a historic cellar vault that once served as a storage space. The structure features Gothic vaults built with careful craftsmanship, displaying traditional architectural techniques from northern German building practices of the 16th century.
The building was constructed in 1583 by a Dutch architect as a wine cellar, then served as a merchant storage facility for goods. In 1873 it was converted into wine storage, eventually becoming the restaurant it is today.
The walls display gnome paintings created by art teacher Schurig, who also decorated tables and chairs with pyrography designs. These artworks give the space a distinctive character that has been maintained over time.
The restaurant is located in a basement cellar space, creating a naturally cooler environment for dining. Parking is available nearby through Rathausstrasse 7, and the establishment operates on a regular schedule from Monday to Saturday.
The cellar once served as a trading hub for goods during Flensburg's era as a major Baltic port. The vaulted structures still hold the story of merchants who stored valuable cargo within these walls.
