Nikolai-Apotheke

Nikolai-Apotheke occupies a red brick building with stepped gables and a Gothic arched portal at Südermarkt 12 in the city center. The structure combines a working pharmacy today with medieval architectural details that speak to its long past.

The building was founded in 1436 and survived a devastating fire in 1485, after which it was reconstructed following Lübeck timber-framing principles. This rebuilding shaped the appearance visitors see today.

The building displays late Gothic frescoes with religious themes, including a crescent-moon Madonna near where the former fireplace room once stood in this merchant house. These artworks shape the interior today and speak to the artistic decoration of earlier times.

The pharmacy is centrally located and operates as an active business, so expect regular customer activity during opening hours. The location is easily accessible on foot and fits naturally into a walk through the old town.

Two medieval staircases descend to underground cellars that have served as taverns since 1877. These hidden rooms show how the building shifted from a trading venue to its present function.
