Gethsemanekirche, Modern Lutheran church in Nordend, Frankfurt, Germany
Gethsemane Church is a modern place of worship built with concrete and steel featuring red brick facades in the Nordend district. The building comprises an east-facing sanctuary, a curved staircase, and a tall tower that rises above the surrounding neighborhood.
The land was purchased by St. Peter's Parish in 1901 and the foundation stone was laid in 1968 for the new building. The church was consecrated in 1970 and embraced modern architectural principles.
The organ inside was built by a Bavarian workshop and shapes the sound of services. Its warm tone accompanies community events and concerts throughout the year.
An elevator provides access to the first-floor sanctuary where services are held. The ground floor houses community spaces suitable for meetings, gatherings, and other activities.
The facade blends red brickwork with exposed concrete, creating an unusual visual appearance. This material combination was typical of the 1970s and often catches visitors by surprise.
