Stalburger Oede, Medieval castle in Frankfurt-Nordend, Germany
Stalburger Oede is a castle with a trapezoidal layout in Frankfurt-Nordend, surrounded by gardens and meadows where a moat once ran. The building combines defensive elements with residential spaces and now houses a restaurant and theater.
The building was first mentioned as Odenburg in 1415 and came under the control of influential Frankfurt patrician Claus Stalburg in 1498. It received baroque renovations in the 18th century that fundamentally changed its appearance.
The name comes from the Stalburg family, who shaped the estate and made it a gathering place for Frankfurt's upper classes. Today, visitors come for theater and dining, keeping the castle an active part of the city's social life.
The castle is located at Glauburgstraße 80 and offers spacious grounds with gardens that work well for extended visits. You can explore the site and experience the different outdoor areas either from the restaurant or by walking around the building.
A painter named Carl Theodor Reiffenstein documented in the 19th century how the castle was reshaped and lost its medieval character. His observations show how the moat was filled, the bridge removed, and windows replaced.
