Gut Holzhausen, Heritage estate in Nieheim, Germany
Gut Holzhausen is a neoclassical manor house set on a square island completely surrounded by moats, with three-part facade divisions supported by Tuscan columns. The building features sandstone ornaments with decorative vases along its roof, creating a formal and symmetrical appearance.
The von der Borch family received the estate as a feudal grant in 1484 from Prince-Bishop Simon III zur Lippe and has owned it continuously ever since. The property remained under family ownership through the centuries, shaping the regional history for more than five hundred years.
The estate functions as a gathering place for international events and conferences that draw visitors from around the world. People come here to participate in cultural programs and seminars held within the historic buildings on the grounds.
The estate sells potatoes grown on site using biodynamic farming methods that have been practiced here since 1956 and certified under Demeter standards. Visitors can purchase these products directly and learn about the agricultural approach used across the property.
A medieval dovecote with a conical roof stands among the estate's stable buildings, preserving a structure from centuries past. A half-timbered rental office from 1572 with exposed wooden framework also remains on the grounds, still in use today.
