König-Albert-Denkmal, Stone monument on Windberg hill, Freital, Germany
The König-Albert-Denkmal is an approximately 17-meter sandstone obelisk overlooking the Weißeritz Valley and Freital from the Windberg hilltop. The structure features an equestrian relief on its front face and a bronze plaque with inscriptions on the back.
The monument was constructed between 1903 and 1904 to honor King Albert of Saxony. It was built as an expression of gratitude for his support during the devastating floods of 1897 that affected the region.
The monument features an equestrian relief of the Saxon king with a bronze plaque on the reverse side honoring him. The elevated hilltop location was chosen to emphasize his importance to the region.
Access to the monument begins with a path from the former Windbergschacht mining building leading eastward to the observation point. Benches are available at the top for resting and taking in views of the surrounding landscape.
The equestrian relief underwent extensive restoration in 2021, requiring three desalination cycles and partial stone reinforcement. This detailed conservation work preserved the original surface details for future generations.
