St. Joachim, Catholic church in Deuben, Freital, Germany
St. Joachim is a church building in the Deuben district of Freital, Saxony, with its worship hall located on the upper floor. The building was thoroughly renovated in 1987 and holds artworks from several different periods.
The Catholic community took shape in 1890 when the first Mass was celebrated at the Sachsischer Wolf inn, which led to the church being built in 1895. Its founding reflects the slow growth of a Catholic presence in a region that had long been predominantly Protestant.
Inside the church hangs a medieval cross from the 14th or 15th century, originally from Marienthal Monastery in Ostritz, now placed on the tabernacle covering. This single object draws a visible thread between two religious sites across Saxony.
The church is located in the Deuben district and is easy to reach on foot. Since service times vary, it is worth checking in advance when the worship hall is open to visitors.
The interior holds a reproduction of the Madonna and Child based on a work by the German sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, who was active in the 15th century. Copies of his work are rarely found in small parish churches of this kind.
