Kulkwitzer See, Recreational lake in western Leipzig, Germany
Kulkwitzer See is a recreational lake west of Leipzig covering 170 hectares with a maximum depth of 36 meters. Forests and green spaces surround the water, creating a setting where visitors can swim, camp, and explore along designated paths.
This site was mined for lignite starting in 1864, but after the pits closed in 1963, water gradually filled the excavated areas. The transformation from industrial land into a recreational space took place over several decades.
The lake serves as a gathering place where people swim, walk along the shore, and enjoy meals at waterside restaurants. The space has been designed to welcome visitors year-round for both active recreation and quiet moments by the water.
Several beaches and water sports facilities line the shore, with restaurants and camping areas scattered throughout the grounds. A waterfront path running about 1.5 kilometers helps visitors navigate and offers easy access to different sections.
Divers can explore submerged objects beneath the surface, including a sunken chapel and aircraft wreckage left from military training. This hidden underwater landscape draws people interested in exploring beyond the typical swimming and walking experience.
