Grünauer Welle, 1999 in Betrieb genommenes Sport- und Freizeitbad in einem dekonstruktivistischen Gebäude (Entwurf: Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner) im Leipziger Stadtteil Grünau
Grünauer Welle is a swimming facility in Leipzig that opened in 1999 and features a distinctive modern design. The complex contains multiple pools including a 25-meter competition pool with six lanes, leisure pools of varying depths, a slide, and covers approximately 5,160 square meters (55,520 square feet).
The project was selected in a 1996 architecture competition, with Behnisch & Partner winning the design. Construction was completed in 1999, marking the first new indoor pool built in Leipzig in over 26 years as part of the city's post-reunification development efforts.
The building takes its name from the wave motif in its design and the Grünau district where it stands. It serves as a gathering place where neighbors of all ages meet to swim, exercise, or spend leisure time together in the community.
The facility is located in southern Grünau-Mitte along Stuttgarter Allee and is easily accessible by bus, tram, and S-Bahn. The complex offers changing rooms and showers, is accessible for visitors of all ages, and includes a cafeteria for refreshments after swimming.
The roof features solar thermal collectors that heat water and reduce energy costs, making this one of the early modern sports facilities with environmentally conscious energy technology. This reflects Leipzig's early commitment to sustainable infrastructure in public spaces.
