Herrenhaus Waterneverstorf, Neoclassical manor house in Behrensdorf, Germany.
Herrenhaus Waterneverstorf is a neoclassical manor house in Behrensdorf, on the shore of Kiel Bay in Schleswig-Holstein. The building has a symmetrical two-wing layout with a central projecting section, a form that is typical of noble country houses in northern Germany.
The property goes back to a medieval water castle and received its current name, Waterneverstorf, in the 19th century. The neoclassical rebuilding that followed was part of a broader wave of modernization that touched many noble estates in northern Germany at that time.
The estate served for generations as a gathering place for artists and scholars who came together to exchange ideas and work side by side. This tradition gave the property a role in shaping the intellectual life of the region around Kiel that went well beyond its function as a private residence.
Parts of the estate can be rented as holiday apartments, making it possible to stay directly on the grounds. The property sits right on the water and is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, especially along the approach avenue.
The name Waterneverstorf comes directly from the Low German word for water, a direct reference to the original water castle on which the current building stands. This link between the medieval foundations and the later house can still be read in the way the building sits right at the edge of the lake.
