Piraten-Open-Air, Open-air theatre in Grevesmühlen, Germany

Piraten-Open-Air is an open-air theatre on a seven-hectare site at Piratenplatz 1 in Grevesmühlen, where it has performed since 2005 and at this purpose-built venue since 2007. Its stage covers 9,000 square metres. The productions adapt Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, tracing the pirate Joshua Flint's encounters in ten episodes up to the discovery of the treasure.

The Piraten-Open-Air toured Germany, Europe and overseas as a mobile theatre for more than 13 years before settling in Grevesmühlen in 2005. It first played at the Ploggensee, then moved in 2007 to a new open-air theatre on a seven-hectare site on Schweriner Landstraße, with a 9,000 m² stage. In 2025 the town renamed that stretch of road Piratenplatz, effective 1 October 2025.

The plot draws on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island: in ten episodes up to the finding of the treasure, the story follows the fateful encounters of the pirate Joshua Flint. The ensemble is regularly reinforced by well-known television actors, and Peter Venzmer has been artistic director since 2005.

The venue is in Grevesmühlen and is easy to find, but arriving early gives you a chance to choose a good spot before the seating fills up. Since all performances take place outside, bring a layer of clothing for cooler summer evenings.
