Hansaweg, Fernwanderweg zwischen Herford und Hameln
The Hansaweg is a long-distance trail in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony that stretches about 75 kilometers between the Werre and Weser rivers. It connects Herford with Hameln through varied landscapes of woods, fields, hills, and small villages, with each of six stages offering different views and local sights.
The trail follows an old trade route from medieval times that merchants used to connect trading centers and bring wealth to these towns. This historical connection still shapes the architecture and structure of the towns along the route today.
The trail connects historic Hanse towns and shows how these places keep their medieval past alive in daily life today. In the towns along the route, you see cobblestone streets, historical markets, and traditional buildings that still form the center of local life.
The trail is clearly marked with the X9 sign and easy to follow in most places, though a map or app helps at tricky spots. The stages vary in length and are situated near train stations, making flexible planning possible and allowing you to return by public transport each day.
Deer sometimes cross the wooded sections of the trail in the mornings, creating a special wildlife moment that many hikers mention in their reports. These unexpected encounters with animals are often highlights that visitors do not expect beforehand.
