Großsteingrab Heidenopfertisch, Megalithic tomb near Engelmannsbäke, Germany
The Großsteingrab Heidenopfertisch is a prehistoric burial monument in the Wildeshausen region featuring a massive stone slab as a capstone. This slab is supported by standing stones still in their original positions, forming the interior chamber of the ancient grave.
The stone grave dates to the Neolithic period, roughly between 3500 and 2800 BCE, when the Funnel Beaker culture lived in this region. It stands among many megalithic monuments built during that era across the Wildeshausen Geest landscape.
The name Heidenopfertisch suggests ancient ritual practices that may have taken place here. Visitors can sense how closely the early inhabitants connected with their surrounding landscape at this stone tomb.
The site is easily reached via hiking routes 7 and 8 of the archaeological experience trail with parking nearby. The flat landscape makes driving comfortable, and the walk from the parking area to the monument itself is short and straightforward.
The massive capstone is barely shaped and still shows its natural fault surface from the Ice Age. This unaltered condition makes the monument a rare example of megalithic construction without elaborate stone working.
